Habitat for Humanity of Summit County
In-Kind Donations = Products For New Homes
As Famous continues to develop our “Famous Gives Back” initiatives, we plan to make donations in dollars and products to combat hunger, provide clean water, and assist families with their shelter needs.
What They Do
Habitat for Humanity builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. They are a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. We believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Habitat for Humanity of Summit County was organized as an affiliate in 1986. They have been building homes with families in Summit County for over 30 years. Families partner with Habitat to achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better future.
Who It Helps
The Carter-Keys Family: Latrieka Carter-Keys is a hard working single mother. She was encouraged to apply for a Habitat home by a coworker who was also was also accepted into the Homeowner Program. Latrieka is proud of her three children. Daughter, Jimajah is a student of Akron Early College of the University of Akron. Son, Donta is in high school where he is a member of the Pre-Young Scholars Program of Ohio State. Youngest son, Dovion is a member of the Gifted Students Program of Akron Public Schools. All three children maintain merit/honor roll and are devoted to athletics. Children of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate from high school and 116% more likely to graduate college, are less likely to have behavioral problems in high school, and earn substantially higher levels of income than children of renters. Latrieka is proud to finally be a homeowner. She says that purchasing a home that she took part in building herself is a blessing that her family will not take for granted. Each family completes ‘sweat-equity’ where they volunteer in building their own home along as other families homes. They participate in home ownership classes to learn skills including budgeting and home maintenance to set them up for success. Habitat Homeowners like Latrieka truly take pride in their home because it’s something they have worked hard to build alongside their family and other volunteers. “Our home will be filled with lots of love, laughs and great memories.”

Who It Helps
Stacy first heard of the monthly Direct Distribution in her town more than a year ago. The food provided by services like the Direct Distribution allow her to pay bills without sacrificing a meal. “I wish people knew how widespread hunger is in the community. The economy is not catching up with the needs. Even if you have a job, you may still be scraping by to make ends meet.”
Stacy’s favorite part of the distribution is the variety of fruits and vegetables available—especially the berries! She grew up eating from a garden and finds it difficult to stay healthy when produce is out of her price range.
When thinking of those who help provide the monthly distribution, Stacy’s eyes light up and she smiles softly, “Saying thank you just isn’t enough.”
$2,500 in purchases = 14 years of clean water per person
844 million people worldwide 1 in 9 individuals lack access to clean drinkable water. Water, sanitation & hygiene related disease kills nearly 1 million people each year.
What They Do
Water.org is an international nonprofit organization that has positively transformed millions of lives around the world through access to safe water and sanitation. Founded by Gary White and Matt Damon, Water.org pioneers market-driven financial solutions to the global water crisis. For more than 25 years, they’ve been providing families with hope, health and the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.
Who It Helps
every morning required a long walk to collect water needed for breakfast, bathing, and cleaning - usually from a distant, unsafe natural source. There were only a few occasions on which Sabina purchased water from a vendor. She valued the time saved by just purchasing water, but for her it was unwise and financially unfeasible to do this regularly. Thus, pond water was the family’s primary option.
Sabina’s home and small farm are located in a rural village outside Nairobi, Kenya. Two long rainy seasons benefit Sabina’s crops; however, it wasn’t until recently that she could take advantage of the abundant precipitation.
Water.org made possible in Kenya what, to a resourceful woman like Sabina, seemed an ideal solution. With their help, Sabina financed a rain catchment system. During and after the rains, Sabina can store enough water for her home and crops. This frees her from time spent collecting water. And, her well-fed plants earn her money, some of which she used to repay her loan.
Sabina approaches her days with the same boldness as before, but now she has more say over her mornings. What she does with that time is her choice, and this is why we support Water.org to empower other women like Sabina.
