Having a healthy work/life balance is essential to your personal success and the overall company’s success for several reasons. Maintaining this balance will result in a happy home life that will inevitably translate to your happiness at work. Working as a family unit is very similar to working as a team player in an organization. Like anything, being successful in this balance requires work, planning and commitment. The rewards will be monumental.
I have learned over the years that having this balance does take planning and organization. One of the things I like to do is set some yearly goals for me in my personal and professional life. This helps me set aside time weekly to keep me on track with these goals. My boys play sports and like many kids have a packed schedule. I, like most parents, want to be there every step of the way. We talk as a family to communicate what the plan is for the week and even go as far as keeping a family calendar that coincides with important commitments at work. My wife Holly and I have grown to love this as it helps manage our busy work/life schedules. We use an APP call Cozi that I highly recommend!
From a work perspective, the end of my week always finishes with my next week’s plan. I really believe having a plan will allow all of us to achieve so much more. This is one of the disciplines that have actually gained me more time in my week.
Lastly, the most important thing to remember is when things do get busy or unbalanced, as they will, take a step back to regroup, refocus, and rebalance!
