Soft Starters and Why to Use Them

Most technician have heard of “hard start kits” or start capacitors but have you heard of soft starters? A typical hard start kit is designed to give your compressor a boost to get it started. While a hard start kit does have its place in the world of HVAC, a soft starter may be a better choice for your project. A soft starter reduces inrush current by 60-70%. What does this mean for your install and the equipment? Well for starters, it means no more lights dimming. It also reduces the noise of the AC starting. It can also provide extra compressor protection such as low voltage limits. Another huge benefit to having a soft starter is for those who have a generator. As you may know, starting an AC unit can put a huge strain on a generator. However, having a soft starter lowers that strain on the generator so it can start the AC, and it can reduce load shedding from the generator. This means, you stay more comfortable when the power is out. As always, if you need any help with soft starters, feel free to call the Famous Supply HVAC Tech department.
